Why Women Matter: The Importance of Women Political Participation in Libya

At the present time, the importance of women’s participation in the political sphere is more recognized globally. Women’s representation in politics has increased worldwide despite all opinions opposing it. However, statistics show that women are still underrepresented in leadership positions, which leaves them voiceless on the decision-making level. In many countries, the main barriers are social and cultural norms. Even though women have been defying these obstacles for decades, they still have a long way to go.

Libya, on the other hand, is still behind despite the legal framework that supports women’s equal participation in all fields. The representation of women has been very low before the revolution, for instance only four women took leading roles which were in non-sovereign ministries such as Media, Social Affairs and Culture. However, during the revolution in 2011, women managed to participate more in decision-making positions and played vital roles in making change all over the country.

Libyan women in Politics

Women in politics matter because Libya is in a critical time and cannot afford to leave anyone behind. Women must be more aware of their rights, needs and duties towards their country. Increasing the participation of women in politics will raise awareness in many fields, namely social and economic ones. In addition, more women representation in political fields will make them more engaged in all sectors, and will consequently empower women to reach their full potentials. Moreover, it will improve their understating of their rights, and it will eventually make their voice heard.

While women are moving forward with the economic development in the country, it is highly important to work on highlighting the importance of women’s role in the development process which will lead to women’s recognition by the community.

In the Why Women Matter campaign, Jusoor raised awareness on the importance of women’s representation in politics in four cities across the country, and launched a media campaign to reach out to a larger audience. It is time to lift the curtains and let the people see how women work tirelessly to reshape and preserve the future.
